Named with respect to late Queen Adelaide, a German-born consort of King William IV, the city was founded in year 1836 as the planned capital for a freely settled British province in Australia. One of Adelaide's founding fathers, Colonel William Light, designed the city and chose it to be close to the River Torrens in the area originally populated by Kaurna group. Light's design set out Adelaide in a grid layout, interspaced by wide boulevards and large public squares, and entirely surrounded by parkland. Early Adelaide was nurtured by religious freedom and a commitment to political progress and also by civil liberties, which led to world-first reforms. Currently, Adelaide is known for its colourful festivals and various sporting events, wine and culture, its food, its long beachfronts, and also its large defence and manufacturing sections. Furthermore, the city continues to rank highly as a very livable city, being one of the Top 10 in The Economist's World's Most Livable Cities globally.

Much of Adelaide City's landscape was bushland before British settlement, with some variation – swamps and marshlands as well were occurent around the coast. However, most of the original vegetation has been cleared with what is left to be found in reserves such as the Cleland Conservation Park and Belair National Park. A number of creeks and rivers flow through the Adelaide area.

Culture, Arts and Entertainment

The City's arts scene flourished in year 1970s under the guidance of premier Don Dunstan, removing some of the more puritanical restrictions on cultural activities then prevalent around AUS. It was at this time that the popular Adelaide Festival of Arts and Fringe Festival were established, and over time they have created sister events including the Adelaide Cabaret Festiva, Adelaide Festival of Ideas, Adelaide Writers' Week l, Adelaide Film Festival and the WOMADelaide which is done on March. Hayley Lever, originally from Adelaide became a leader in the Impressionist art movement in the United States. Other festivals include FEAST, one of Australia's four main queer culture celebrations; Tasting Australia, a biennial food and wine affair; and the Royal Adelaide Show, an annual agricultural show and state fair. Reflecting the city's multiculturalism, there are many ethnic festivals including for Germans and Greeks. Adelaide City is also home to the annual Adelaide Christmas Pageant, the world's largest Christmas parade.

Adelaide proudly hosted the Formula One Australian Grand Prix in 1985 and 1996 on a street circuit in the city's east parklands, before losing it to Melbourne. The year 1991 State Bank collapse plunged both Adelaide and SA into economic recession, and its effects lasted until the year 2004. The latter years have seen the Clipsal 500 V8 Supercars race make use of sections of the former Formula One circuit

Climate

The city's climate is very favourable. Adelaide has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, wherein most of the rainfalls start in the winter days. Of all the Australian capital cities, Adelaide is actually the driest, and it has a semi-arid climate influence due to its dryness. Moreover, Rainfall is quite unreliable, light and infrequent throughout summer. In contrast, the winter has fairly reliable rainfall with June being the wettest month of the year, averaging around 80 millimeter. Frostings are rare, with the most notable occurrences having occurred in July 1908 and also July 1982. There is usually no appreciable snowfall, except for very light and somewhat rare falls in Mt Lofty and some places in the Hills of Adelaide as well.
