It was first established in year 1955 as a master planned satellite town by the South Australian Housing Trust on 3,000 acres (12 km2) of rural land between the much older towns of Salisbury and Smithfield.
Elizabeth has a good residential suburbs (the earliest were Elizabeth North and Elizabeth South) wherein each configured as a local community around a small shopping centre (each originally contained a bank, supermarket, hotel and service station along with other shops), as well as the larger shopping precinct in Elizabeth itself.
Majority of the employers such as Holden and the Long Range Weapons Establishment (later Weapons Research Establishment (WRE), now known Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO)) moved into the area, and lots of migrants (especially English people) were encouraged to settle in Elizabeth and its surrounding suburbs.
The town of Elizabeth is home to large areas of open space, with the most prominent being Fremont Park, located on Main North Road. It is currently the strongest team in South Australian football, having won eight of the last ten SANFL Premierships. They play all of their home games at Hamra Homes Oval (AKA Elizabeth Oval). Elizabeth also has an association football club (soccer) the Playford City Patriots, who play in the South Australian State League. Elizabeth is the home city of the Central District Bulldogs, an Australian rules football team in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Their home stadium is in Ramsay Park in Elizabeth West. Elizabeth is curently part of the City of Playford, the City of Elizabeth having merged with the City of Munno Para in year 1997. The Elizabeth Shopping Centre (formerly known in the earlier days as Elizabeth Town Centre, originally with open air malls) has been progressively expanded since the 1960s, with a majority of the renovation and extension completed in 2004. Prior to the amalgamation, Elizabeth was the sister city of Fremont, California. The Lake Elizabeth in Fremont Central Park in the California city is named for Elizabeth, SA.
Elizabeth railway station is a central railway station on the Gawler railway line which is situated in the northern Adelaide suburbs of Elizabeth and Edinburgh. It is located 25.8 kilometer by railway from the Adelaide train Station. The train station opened in year 1960 and had the same facilities like that of Cheltenham, Broadmeadows and also Womma, but they were demolished in year 1998 and has been renovated since, in year 1999. Train Passengers access the station by the two low-level crossings, before the redevelopment, an underground pedestrian subway was provided, but this has since been filled in. Elizabeth station has a long roof between 40–50 m in length to protect patrons from the bad weather. There is a properly staffed ticket office, open only during the morning and around lunch time on weekdays, however it has no public toilets. There used to be a rail real time information board and an emergency phone on the platform.The Station has been designated a Safer Station with enhanced lighting, CCTV ccamera surveillance and security help phones are also provided.
