Mount Wudinna

Wudinna is a small town in the central region of South Australia. The town was first settled in year 1861. It was proclaimed a town in year 1916. It is on the Eyre Highway across the top of Eyre Peninsula. The region is known as The granite country for its deposits of granite in the area, with tourists able to travel the granite trail to explore local landmarks.

Quarrying of granite has occurred in the local area since the 1990s. Some granite blocks quarried at the Desert Rose Quarry near Mt. Wudinna can be up to 8 cubic metres in volume and weigh 20 tonnes, before being cut into smaller blocks for shipping around Australia, or for export to Asian and European markets. The town lies in the centre of South Australia's granite belt, and there are a number of interesting granite outcrops in the area. Dominating the skyline to the north-east of the town is Mt Wudinna, which, at 261m in height, is the second largest granite outcrop in Australia. Only Bald Rock, near Tenterfield in northern NSW, is larger. There is a BBQ and picnic shelter in the recreation area at the base of the rock where you can recover after a hike to the summit to take in the breathtaking views. This granite was employed in the building of The Australian Farmer, an 8 metre (26 feet) high statute that was initially carved in the town as a community project to commemorate the early settlers. Mount Wudinna is Australia's second largest monolith after Mount Augustus. It is located 12 kilometers north-east of the town.
